Binary Kernel Modules List
From OpenDriversWiki
In September 2001, Arjan van de Ven attempted to create a list of "binary only" modules for the Linux kernel. His list contained 26 different modules. Since then, many more proprietary modules have been created but, it appears, no list of proprietary modules has been maintained. This page is an attempt to create this list.
Note that although this page is called "binary" kernel modules, it is ok to include any module that is not under the GPL or is distributed with additional restrictions. As such, this list is intended to include all modules which are in any sense "non-free".

Hardware drivers
- 4-Front - soundcard drivers
- Adaptec - A search for 'linux' on their downloads now lists 353 packages. Some of these contain source code which are "all rights reserved".
- Agilent - Fiberchannel cards
- Atheros - madwifi wireless network driver, especially it's Hardware Abstraction Layer part.
- ATI - 3D driver for their hardware
- aureal - driver for soundcard (aureal bought by creative, open source effort to maintain and reverse engineer the drivers).
- Conexant - winmodem driver by Linuxant
-
Emulex - Fiberchannel cards. these drivers are GPL and would indicate they have changed their ways. -
Highpoint - lowlevel IDE driver + software raid. RocketRAID 3220 support now in the Linux tree. -
IBM - All hardware networkdrivers for S/390All IBM drivers are free now (but don't take my word for it). - Lucent - driver for winmodem
- Motorola - driver for winmodem
- M-Systems - software for programming at least some flash chips still proprietary. No idea if this includes kernel modules however.
- NVidia - 3D driver for their hardware
- Olicom - tokenring networkcard (can't even find a website for this company).
- PCTel - winmodem driver (don't appear to distribute the driver anymore)
-
Philips - webcam driver, discontinued, open source drivers now exist. -
Promise - lowlevel IDE driver + software raid.Source code for SuperTrak SX6000 is available under the GPL. No other drivers appear to be distributed. - RAlink - driver for wireless. some non-free components.
- Sigma designs - driver for soundcard. Drivers for NetStream 2000 (realmagicdev84xx.o) is GPL. Do they still distribute drivers that are not?

Highlevel drivers
- Cisco - IPSEC
- Hewlett Packard - High level security modules (LSM). Anyone got a link? HP are pretty pro-open-source these days.

- SGI - XFS cluster extensions, High level security modules (LSM)
-
Sistina - GFS and cluster extensions for LVM. Free'd by Red Hat http://sources.redhat.com/cluster/ - Veritas - Filesystem and Software RAID cluster extensions
-
Wirex - High level security modules (LSM). Free'd by Novell apparently. -
Kqemu - acceleration layer for qemu emulation. Now GPL. Open source replacement development stopped as now unneeded. - Kernel Hooking Module for ServerProtect for Linux - Real time virus scanning from Trend Micro Incorporated.
